Consensus Chicago

Location: Chicago, il - Map It STATUS: Active

Consensus is a new nonprofit community arts center on the southwest side of Chicago where people connect, create, and cultivate. BWB is proud to support the unique mission of Consensus that aims to build peace by fostering collaboration among artists and human service projects in Chicago. Their programs, events, and outreach mobilize the arts to prevent violence and promote healing. They offer their space as an open, beautiful, inspiring environment where talents become gifts to the community.

What We Do

Consensus is just getting started, but we can give you an idea of what our programs, events, and outreach look like. For example, in February we hosted an event featuring work from LYRIC (Let Your Rhymes Inspire Creativity), a mentoring organization that teaches youth poetry and hip-hop to help them develop positive lifestyles. Then, in March, we helped produce the first annual Community Resource Fair & Mini Conference at our neighborhood public high school in partnership with its Parent Advisory Council. And now, thanks to a BWB grant, we are planning a summer program called Graffic Traffic, which will use mural painting and community dialogue to teach high school students about the relationship between street art and neighborhood realities.

Project Status

Most immediately, Consensus is working to purchase the unique live/work property we currently rent. We have determined that this property’s amenities and location provide the best resources of any space we have found in Chicago to achieve our mission. So we have been securing a partnership with the Chicago Community Loan Fund (CCLF) to finance the purchase, but we are still looking for additional investors to cover down-payment and renovations.
