Some Burners Without Borders are working with the City of Chicago to help senior citizens (and others) with Green Design and reducing the risk of basement flooding...

After a series of heavy rains in September, they are working with community groups, churches, block clubs, chambers of commerce, etc. to coordinate disconnection of downspouts on homes and businesses.

Rain that falls on roofs will be re-directed from sewers to lawns and gardens.  By keeping water out of sewers, there is less risks that sewage will back up in basements. BWB volunteers are assisting with training and directly helping senior citizens to do the work. The project also involves distribution of rain barrels and community Rain Gardens in public spaces like local church yards.  The idea is to add beauty to a neighborhood while spreading concepts of good storm water management.  A special sub-group or BWB has been asked to make certain the culture and values of gifting, etc. are evident in the work.
