It is natural that we want to do everything we can to help in this massive clean up that will likely go on for years. As we learned from the small Bay Area spill clean up, it isn't enough to have a desire to volunteer. There are safety considerations and training you need to have before you will be allowed on the beaches. Learn how you can get trained and be safe.

Summer Burkes Takes on Big Oil

BWB's Summer Burkes has been working tirelessly in New Orleans to find ways to help support the clean up of the devastating Gulf Coast oil spill. Within the first week of the spill, BWB connected Summer to the founder of Matter of Trust to build Hair Booms in the Gulf that local fisherman can use to protect the beaches and marshes.

Click Here to see a short demonstration video of how much more effective these hair Booms are than the Booms that are being used by BP.

Summer Crab Trap

Summer has been forced to leave the Gulf Coast due to noxious poisons in the air from the dispersant that BP has been dropping in the Gulf. And with the hurricane season just around the corner, she and thousands of others are terrified by the thought of millions of gallons of oil coming to their shores, and they want to leave.

What Can You Do?

Support the people of the Gulf Coast by donating to the gas fund that will enable people who have been out of work due to the spill, a way out. Go to Coastal Rescue to donate to this urgent need.

Incredible Solution from Projects Green

BWB is also in contact with Gene Long from Projects Green, who has an EPA approved mineral that turns oil into a soluble fat that can actually be eaten by fish. Due to long-standing contracts with Dawn Soap, Gene has had difficulty in getting this safe, effective solution into the hands of BP. Check it out Here.

BWB has been investigating how volunteers can get involved in the Gulf Coast Clean Up.

Training for On site Cleanup

You must first have the 24 Hour Hazwoper Training only offered by private companies.  OSHA apparently just makes the guidelines but isn't in the training business. This class can be taken on-line for around $200.  Any field experience needed is provided by the company that hires you. Click Here to go to a website that offers this training.  There are many online services available but this is one of the least expensive at $200.

OSHA has a very informative and surprisingly interesting overview of what to expect and safety precautions to take when cleaning up an oil spill.  Click Here and scroll down to NIEHS Oil Spill Safety Awareness Training Tool to download the power point presentation.

Volunteer

The Fish and Wildlife service has listed a phone number on their website that is run by BP. They are  taking names and numbers of potential volunteers and say they will be calling people to volunteer when the need arises. You can call 866-448-5816 to get your name on the list.

Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana They are taking names for future opportunities.

Jobs

Hazardous Clean Up  companies are hiring temporary workers to help clean up beaches and waterways.

Do you live on the Gulf Coast?

Free Hazardous Waste trainings are emerging along the Gulf Coast to prepare residents to respond should oil come ashore. Check with your local newspaper to find out if they are happening in your area.

What you can do right now
