East Devon Beach Clean - Background

BWB volunteers help to clean up wreckage from a stranded container ship.

In January 2007, the container ship MSC Napoli took on water and was intentionally beached off the coast of East Devon to avoid sinking. Many containers fell overboard and washed up on the beaches along the coast.

The Napoli's contractors cleaned up the large pieces of wreckage and cargo, but there remained a great deal still to be done.

Burners Without Borders registered as a volunteer group with the East Devon Council, who organised a series of volunteer beach cleaning events throughout March.

Each of the events was two and a half hours long and took place around low tide.
