April 25th is National Day of Caring. I am a volunteer coordinator with the United Way and have been given a pretty cool project. Some of you work for corporations, others have time on your hands, hopefully some others can be simply inspired to participate.

NOTE: the project is child facility project 2 and it reads as "full."  This is so I can hand-pick my volunteers.  You will be registered on the website and given credit for the project hours afterwards so you can print a report for your boss.

Mission: to come together and give of our labor to improve our local community while making new connections with other volunteers and enjoying the feel of a job well done.

Project Site: 8203 Sam Rayburn Drive

The project is simply tearing apart a concrete/stone "bunker" and moving the stone to the next door lot.  Here is a rough project description and itinerary.

Project Tasks:
1.    Use jackhammer to break up stone. (2 people)
a.    Safety Glasses, Earphones, Gloves, Steel-toed Boots.
b.    Jackhammer
2.    Use wheelbarrow to transport stone. (4 people)
a.    Safety Glasses, earplugs, gloves, heavy shoes/boots.
b.    Wheelbarrow
3.    Load Wheelbarrows with loose stone (4 people)
a.    Safety Glasses, earplugs, heavy shoes/boots, gloves
b.    Strong back

Given the presence of proper safety equipment, duties can rotate.  There may be some who have never used a jackhammer before that can have the opportunity to learn.

I will be providing smoked brisket sandwiches/water for after-project lunch and will have orange slices/water available throughout.

Itinerary: Friday, April 25th
(Optional) 9:00 AM Meet at Hands on Central Texas Volunteer Central United Way Days of Caring Kickoff at Alamo Park located at 2100 Alamo Street
(Optional) 9:45 AM Leave to project Site
10:00 AM Project Briefing On-site
10:15 AM Work Begins
12:00 PM Break 15 minutes orange slices/water
12:15 PM Work Begins Again
  2:00 PM Project Completion/Wrapup-feedback forms

This is a very short time allocation, so be prepared to work hard.  If you do not have a Burners Without Borders T-shirt, let me know and we will get on it.  I can have t-shirts fed-exed but we all need to be wearing them for photos.  I have an extra one I will bring too.

I am thinking I will prolly be able to pull off some safety equipment, but if you have your own so much the better.

Please contact me off-list to tell me you can help.

This is your chance to do something and be recognized for it.  There is a good chance if you take this to your boss, you can get time off for it.
